Norman Evelyn Leslie (born July 13, 1877 – died March 29, 1927) was a Scottish soldier and a "representative peer." This meant he was chosen by other Scottish nobles to speak for them in the British Parliament. He held the title of the 19th Earl of Rothes.
Who Was Norman Leslie?
Norman Leslie was born in London, England. His grandmother was the 18th Countess of Rothes. When she passed away in 1893, Norman became the 19th Earl of Rothes. This made him a leader in one of Scotland's old noble families.
Serving His Country
Norman Leslie had a long career in the military. He first joined a part-time army group called the Militia in 1895. He became a Lieutenant in 1897. Later, in 1905, he was made a Captain in another Militia group, the Fife Royal Garrison Artillery.
In 1911, he became a Lieutenant-Colonel. He commanded the Highland Cyclist Battalion. This group was part of the famous Black Watch regiment.
World War I and Beyond
The Earl of Rothes was chosen as a Scottish representative peer in 1906. He kept this important role until 1923. He fought bravely in the First World War.
During the war, his family home, Leslie House, became a hospital for injured soldiers. His wife, Noëlle, Countess of Rothes, worked tirelessly as a Red Cross nurse. She helped at Leslie House and in London.
Norman Leslie was promoted to colonel in 1918. He was injured during the war and never fully recovered. In 1919, he sold Leslie House and moved his family to England.
His Family Life
Lord Rothes married Lucy Noël Martha Dyer-Edwardes on April 19, 1900, in London. They had two sons:
- Malcolm George Dyer-Edwardes Leslie, 20th Earl of Rothes (born 1902). He married Beryl Violet Dugdale in 1926.
