Malcolm George Dyer-Edwardes Leslie, 20th Earl of Rothes (born February 8, 1902 – died May 17, 1975) was an important Scottish nobleman. He was the leader of a historic Scottish family group called Clan Leslie. He held the title of Earl of Rothes from 1927 until his death in 1975. He became Earl after his father, Norman Leslie, 19th Earl of Rothes, passed away.

Early Life of Malcolm Leslie

Malcolm George Dyer-Edwardes Leslie was born on February 8, 1902. His birthplace was Kensington, a part of London, England. His father, Norman Leslie, was also a Scottish nobleman. Malcolm's mother was Noël Leslie, Countess of Rothes. She was famous for surviving the sinking of the Titanic. She even helped row a lifeboat to rescue other survivors. They were later picked up by the ship RMS Carpathia.

Family Life and Children

On July 17, 1926, Malcolm Leslie married Beryl Dugdale. Beryl was the daughter of Lionel Dugdale. Her father was a former High Sheriff of Yorkshire, a special official in England. Beryl's brother was Thomas Dugdale, 1st Baron Crathorne.

Malcolm and Beryl had three children:

  • Lady Jean Leslie (1927–2017). She married Roderick Mackenzie in 1949.
  • Lady Evelyn Leslie (1929–2011). She married Sir Gerard William Mackworth-Young in 1949.
  • Ian Lionel Malcolm Leslie, 21st Earl of Rothes (1932–2005). He married Marigold Evans-Bevan in 1955.

When Malcolm Leslie died in 1975, his son, Ian, became the next Earl of Rothes.

Career and Public Service

Malcolm Leslie worked as the Chairman of the National Mutual Life Assurance Society. This was a company that helped people plan for their future.

After his father's death in 1927, he became the 20th Earl of Rothes. He also served as a Representative Peer for Scotland. A Representative Peer was a special member of the House of Lords (part of the UK Parliament). These peers were chosen to represent Scottish noble families. This system of choosing peers later ended.

Later Years and Legacy

The Earl of Rothes passed away on May 17, 1975. To honor his memory, a special research position was created. This was the Rothes Chair in Preventive Ophthalmology. It was set up at London University in 1977. This position helps with research into preventing eye diseases.
