Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Brigadier-General Arthur Edward Dalzell, 13th Earl of Carnwath (born 25 December 1851 – died 9 March 1941) was a British Army officer. He also served as a Representative Peer for Scotland, which meant he represented Scottish nobles in the British Parliament.

Early Life and Family

Arthur Dalzell was born into an old Scottish family. He was one of five children. His father was Colonel Robert Alexander George Dalzell, and his mother was Sarah Bushby Harris. His family had a long history.

In 1887, Arthur's older brother, Robert, became the Earl of Carnwath. This meant Arthur and his sisters were given the special rank of children of an Earl.

Arthur Dalzell married Muriel Wyndham Knatchbull in 1902. They had two children:

  • Muriel Marjorie Dalzell (1903–1995)
  • Arthur Robert Dalzell (1907–1909)

A Life in the Army

Arthur Dalzell studied at East Sheen and Cheltenham. He joined the army in 1870 as an Ensign, which is a junior officer rank. The next year, he moved to the 52nd (Oxfordshire) Regiment of Foot. He became a lieutenant in 1871 and later a captain.

His first time in battle was in Upper Burma between 1891 and 1892. After this, he became a Major. He was then put in charge of army training in parts of India.

Dalzell also fought in the Second Anglo-Boer War in South Africa. He took part in important battles like Paardeberg. For his brave service there, he received a special award called the Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1900.

His sister, Lady Maud Rolleston, wrote a book about her experiences during the Boer War. She even set up a special home to help injured soldiers recover.

After returning from South Africa, Dalzell became the leader of the 1st Battalion, the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He was later promoted to the high rank of honorary Brigadier-General. He served on the Western Front during World War I, which was a major part of the war.

Becoming an Earl

In 1931, Arthur's nephew, Ronald Arthur Dalzell, passed away. This meant Arthur inherited the title and became the Earl of Carnwath. In 1935, he was chosen to be a Scottish Representative Peer. This role allowed him to represent Scottish nobles in the House of Lords, part of the British Parliament.

Arthur Edward Dalzell died on 9 March 1941, at his home in Somerset, England.
