Ian Lionel Malcolm Leslie, 21st Earl of Rothes (born May 10, 1932 – died April 15, 2005) was a Scottish nobleman. This means he was a member of a noble family in Scotland.
He was also a member of the House of Lords from 1974 to 1999. The House of Lords is part of the United Kingdom's Parliament, where some noble people used to have a seat to help make laws.
Early Life and Education
Ian Lionel Malcolm Leslie was born on May 10, 1932. He was the oldest son of Malcolm Leslie and Beryl Violet Dulgdale. From the moment he was born, he had the special title "Master of Rothes."
He went to a famous school called Eton. In 1953, he joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as a young officer. This means he served in the Royal Navy.
In 1974, his father passed away. Ian then became the Earl of Rothes. This also meant he gained a seat in the House of Lords. He was well-liked in the areas of Leslie and Glenrothes. In 2003, he moved to England.
Family Life and Legacy
In 1955, Ian Leslie married Marigold Evans-Bevan. She was from Wales. They had two sons together. Their first son, James, was born in 1958. Their second son, Alexander, was born in 1962.
Lord Rothes died on April 15, 2005, when he was 72 years old. His oldest son, James, became the next Earl of Rothes. James was not married at the time. This meant that his brother, Alexander, was next in line to inherit the title if James did not have children.
