Ian Colin Maitland, the 15th Earl of Lauderdale (born January 30, 1891 – died February 17, 1953), was an important Scottish nobleman. Before he became Earl, he was known as Viscount Maitland from 1924 to 1931.
He served as a special representative for Scotland in the House of Lords. This is like a part of the UK Parliament. He held this role from 1931 to 1945.

Early Life and Education
Ian Colin Maitland was the only child of Frederick Maitland, 14th Earl of Lauderdale. His mother was Gwendoline Lucy. She passed away in 1929.
His mother's father was Robert Vaughan Williams. He was a judge from Flintshire. Ian became the Earl of Lauderdale when his father died in 1931.
He went to a famous school called Eton College. This school is known for educating many important people.
Military Service and Public Roles
Ian Maitland was a soldier during the First World War. He was a Major in the 3rd Reserve Battalion. This was part of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. He served in this role from 1915 to 1916.
In 1918, he worked as an Aide-de-Camp. This means he was a personal assistant to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. The Lord Lieutenant was the King's representative in Ireland.
He was also a member of the Royal Company of Archers. This group is the King's Bodyguard for Scotland. It is a ceremonial role. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant for Berwickshire. This is a local official who helps the Lord-Lieutenant.
Other Activities
Lord Lauderdale was involved in several organizations. From 1931 to 1935, he was the president of the Conservative Association in Southampton. This is a political group.
He also served as the Honorary President. This was for the Association of Certified and Corporate Accountants. He held this position from 1931 to 1945.
Family Life
Lord Lauderdale married Ethel Mary Ivy on November 11, 1912. She was the oldest daughter of James Jardine Bell-Irving. They lived at Thirlestane Castle, which is near Lauder.
They had two children together:
- Lady Sylvia Gwendoline Eva Maitland (born 1913 – died 1991). She married William Conolly-Carew, 6th Baron Carew in 1937. They had two sons and two daughters.
- Ivor Colin, Viscount Maitland (born 1915 – died 1943). He was killed in action in North Africa when he was 27 years old. He married Helena Ruth Perrott in 1936. She was the daughter of Sir Herbert Charles Perrott. They had three daughters.
After Ivor's death, his daughters were given special status. A Royal Warrant in 1953 made them equal to an Earl's daughters. This was published in the London Gazette.
Ivor's Daughters
- Lady Mary Helena Maitland (born 1938). She is now known as Mary, Lady Biddulph. She married the 4th Baron Biddulph in 1958. They had two sons and one daughter. One of their sons is Nicholas Maitland-Biddulph, the 5th Baron Biddulph.
- Lady Anne Priscilla Maitland (born 1940). She married John Joseph Eyston. He comes from a notable Catholic family. They have one son and two daughters.
- Lady Elizabeth Sylvia Maitland (born 1943). She was born after her father passed away. She is not married.
