Ludy Pudluk (born January 31, 1943 – died July 1, 2019) was an important leader in Canada's northern territories. He was a politician and a cabinet minister. He also cared a lot about the environment and worked as a climate change activist. Ludy Pudluk lived in a place called Resolute, in Nunavut.

About Ludy Pudluk's Life

Ludy Pudluk was born on January 31, 1943. His birthplace was Qaumarjuiton, near Pond Inlet. In 1958, his family moved to Resolute, Nunavut. At that time, Resolute was part of the Northwest Territories. He continued to live there for the rest of his life.

In 2008, Ludy Pudluk spoke to the Qikiqtani Truth Commission. This commission was set up to learn about the history of the Inuit people. He shared his experiences about a time when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police killed many Inuit sled dogs. This was a difficult time for Inuit families.

In 2017, Ludy Pudluk received a special honour. He became a member of the Order of Nunavut. This award recognizes people who have done great things for Nunavut. He passed away on July 1, 2019, in Iqaluit.

Ludy Pudluk's Political Career

Ludy Pudluk was a politician for many years. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in 1975. This is like the parliament for the Northwest Territories. He represented the High Arctic area.

Serving in the Legislature

Ludy Pudluk was re-elected three more times. He won elections in 1979, 1983, and 1987. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the High Arctic.

In 1991, the areas for elections changed. His district became known as Quttiktuq. He was elected for his final term that year. Ludy Pudluk retired from the legislature in 1995. He had served for 20 years in a row.

After Territorial Politics

After leaving the territorial government, Ludy Pudluk continued to serve his community. He became the mayor of Resolute. As mayor, he helped lead his hometown.
