History of Lugert

How Lugert Began

The town of Lugert was started in 1901. It was built on about 80 acres of land. The town was named after Frank Lugert. He moved to the area in 1898. Frank Lugert owned the land where the town was built. He also owned the main store there.

Life in Early Lugert

Lugert was a busy place in its best years. It had a general store that also served as the post office. This store sold many things. You could find school supplies, groceries, and even tools there. The town also had a bank and two hotels. People could visit two pool halls and two restaurants. There was also a saloon and a lumberyard.

The Big Tornado of 1912

On April 27, 1912, a powerful tornado hit Lugert. It struck around 12:30 p.m. At that time, about 300 people lived in the town. Sadly, three people died in the storm. The tornado destroyed almost all the businesses. Out of 42 business buildings, 41 were ruined.

Lugert Under Water

After the tornado, the town faced another big change. In 1927, the city of Altus needed more water. They built a large dam across the North Fork of the Red River. This dam was 27 feet high. The new dam created Lake Altus-Lugert. The lake's waters flooded the original town of Lugert. This meant the old town was now completely underwater.

Lugert Today

The current community of Lugert is located right next to Lake Altus-Lugert. It is also very close to Quartz Mountain State Park. You can find it along Oklahoma State Highway 44.
