Luigi Tansillo facts for kids
Luigi Tansillo (1510–1568) was a famous Italian poet. He lived a long time ago, in the 1500s. He was known for writing poems in a style similar to another famous poet named Petrarch.
Luigi Tansillo was born in a town called Venosa. When he was older, in 1536, he started working for Pedro Álvarez de Toledo. Pedro was an important leader in Naples. A few years later, in 1540, Luigi joined a special group of thinkers and writers. This group was first called the Accademia degli Umidi. It later changed its name to the Accademia Fiorentina.
Luigi Tansillo worked closely with the leaders of the Kingdom of Naples. He also served as a Captain of Justice in a city called Gaeta. This meant he helped make sure laws were followed there.

Luigi Tansillo's Writings
Luigi Tansillo wrote many poems and books. Some of his works became very well known.
Il vendemmiatore
One of his early poems was called Il vendemmiatore. He wrote this when he was young. However, a powerful church leader, Pope Paul IV, did not like this poem. He put it on a list of forbidden books. This list was called the Index Librorum Prohibitorum.
Il podere
Another important work by Tansillo was Il podere. This book was all about farming. It gave very clear advice on how to choose a good farm. It also explained how to manage the land. Tansillo got his ideas for this book from an ancient writer named Columella.
Music and Translations
Many musicians were inspired by Luigi Tansillo's poems. Composers like Jacquet de Berchem and Giovanni Tommaso Benedictis da Pascarola set his words to music.
Later, in 1587, a French poet named François de Malherbe wrote a poem. It was called Larmes de Saint Pierre. This poem was based on Tansillo's work. In 1594, another famous composer, Orlando di Lasso, also created music for Tansillo's poem, Le lagrime di San Pietro.
Much later, in 1798, an English writer named William Roscoe translated one of Tansillo's poems. It was called Nurse. This translation was very popular and was printed many times.
Luigi Tansillo passed away in a town called Teano. He was 58 years old.
