Luigi Taveri (born September 19, 1929 – died March 1, 2018) was a famous Swiss motorcycle racer. He competed in the exciting world of Grand Prix motorcycle racing from 1954 to 1966.
Taveri is best known for winning the 125cc world championship three times. He was also special because he scored points in six different Grand Prix classes. These classes included 50cc, 125cc, 250cc, 350cc, 500cc, and even Sidecars (motorcycles with a small car attached). In 2016, he was honored as an FIM Legend for his amazing achievements in motorcycling.
Racing Career Highlights
Luigi Taveri started his world championship journey in 1954. His first race was in the 500cc class, riding a Norton bike.
First Wins and Famous Races
In 1955, Taveri achieved his first victory. This happened in the 125cc race at the Spanish Grand Prix. Later that same year, he won another race. This time it was in the 250cc class at the Dutch TT.
He also raced many times in the famous Isle of Man TT event. From 1955 to 1966, he won three races there and finished second several times.
Throughout his career, Taveri rode for several top motorcycle teams. He was a factory rider for MV Agusta, Ducati, MZ, and Kreidler. In 1961, he joined the Honda team.
His very last Grand Prix victory was in 1966, at the 125cc Italian Grand Prix. This win came more than 11 years after his first victory. This shows he had one of the longest winning careers in Grand Prix motorcycle racing history.
Career Achievements
During his racing career, Luigi Taveri won a total of 30 races. He also finished on the podium (top three) 89 times across all racing classes. This includes his three wins at the Isle of Man TT.
After he stopped competing professionally, Taveri continued to be involved in the sport. He often showed off historic motorcycles, keeping the spirit of racing alive.
Luigi Taveri passed away on March 1, 2018, at the age of 88.
