Luis Fernando Rizo-Salom (born December 6, 1971 – died July 21, 2013) was a talented composer from Colombia. He created modern classical music. He lived and worked in Paris, France, starting in 1999. Besides being a composer, he was also a top athlete. He was even part of the French hang gliding team!
His Life and Music
Luis Rizo-Salom studied music at Javeriana University in Bogotá, Colombia. He earned his master's degree in composition in 1998. In 1999, he moved to France. There, he continued his music studies at the famous Conservatoire de Paris.
Luis was very interested in computer music and new technologies. In 2005, he studied at IRCAM. This is a special place in Paris for music, science, and technology. While there, he created a piece called Big Bang. It was for a musical instrument called a viola and electronic sounds.
Awards and Support
From 2005 to 2007, Luis was a composer-in-residence at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, Spain. This means he lived and worked there as an artist. Many groups also supported his work. These included the Nadia and Lili Boulanger Foundation and the Colombian government.
His music was asked for by many important groups. These included the Concert Hall Shizuoka in Japan and the French Ministry for Culture. He also received awards for his music. Some of these were the Salabert Prize and the International Forum for Young Composers Prize.
His Musical Works
Luis Rizo-Salom wrote many kinds of music. He composed pieces for small groups of instruments (chamber works). He also wrote for full orchestras and created electroacoustic pieces. This type of music uses electronic sounds.
His music was played at many modern music festivals. These festivals were in countries like France, England, Russia, and Canada. Famous music groups performed his works. These included the Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Orchestre national d'Île-de-France.
In 2013, a special music CD was released. It featured his chamber music works. The Luis Angel Arango Concert Hall in Bogotá helped produce it.
His Passing
Luis Rizo-Salom passed away in 2013. He died in a hang-gliding accident. He was a champion in this sport, winning the French championship in 2011.
