About Luis Goytisolo's Life
Luis Goytisolo was born in Barcelona, Spain, on March 17, 1935. He has two older brothers who were also writers: José Agustín Goytisolo and Juan Goytisolo.
In 1953, Luis started studying law at university. However, he soon decided to stop his law studies. He wanted to spend all his time writing books and working for political change in Spain. At that time, Spain was under a strict government led by General Franco.
Writing During Difficult Times
In 1963, Luis Goytisolo was put in Carabanchel Prison for four months. This happened because he supported a political group that was against the government. During some of this time, he was kept alone. While he was in prison, he started writing his important novel series, Antagony. He even wrote parts of it on pieces of toilet paper!
His Famous Book Series: Antagony
His series of four books, Antagony, is considered one of the best novels of the 20th century by the newspaper El Mundo. In 2012, all four books were published together as one big book. The first book in the series was translated into English in 2017. Later, in 2022, the full series was translated into English by Brendan Riley and published as a single book.
In March 2015, Luis Goytisolo gave 57 boxes of his personal writings and papers to the Biblioteca Nacional de España. This is Spain's national library, and it means his work will be kept safe for future generations.
