Becoming a Writer
Luis Goytisolo was born in Barcelona on March 17, 1935. He has two older brothers who are also famous writers: José Agustín Goytisolo and Juan Goytisolo.
In 1953, Luis started studying law at university. But he soon decided that writing was his true passion. He left his law studies to focus on becoming a writer. He also became involved in political activities. He was against the government in Spain at that time, which was led by Francisco Franco.
His Time in Prison
In 1963, Luis Goytisolo was put in Carabanchel Prison for four months. This was because of his political beliefs and his opposition to the government. Part of his time in prison was spent all alone.
While he was in prison, he started writing his most famous novel series, Antagony. He wrote his ideas on small pieces of used toilet paper.
The Antagony Series
The Antagony series is a group of four books. Many people, including the newspaper El Mundo, think it is one of the best novels of the 20th century.
The four books were first published separately. Later, in 2012, they were all put together into one big book. The first book in the series was translated into English in 2017. The full series was translated into English by Brendan Riley and published in 2022.
In March 2015, Luis Goytisolo gave 57 boxes of his personal writings and papers to the Biblioteca Nacional de España. This is a very important library in Spain.
