Luis Guillermo de Moncada y Aragón was an important Spanish nobleman and a high-ranking official in the Catholic Church. He was born in Collesano on January 1, 1614, and passed away in Madrid on March 4, 1672.

Luis held many important positions during his life. He was a Knight of the Military Order of Alcantara starting in 1630. He also served as a Viceroy, which is like a governor, in several places. He was the Viceroy of Sicily from 1635 to 1639, and later the Viceroy of Sardinia in 1644. In 1652, he became the Viceroy of Valencia. He was also honored as a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1651, which was a very prestigious award.

Early Life and Family

Luis Guillermo de Moncada was born in Collesano on January 1, 1614. His father was Antonio de Aragón y Moncada, 6th Duke of Montalto. Luis had an older brother, Antonio de Moncada. His brother decided to give up his noble titles in 1631. This meant that Luis, at just 17 years old, inherited many important titles and honors from his family.

Marriages and Later Life

Luis Guillermo de Moncada married twice. His first wife was Maria Enriquez Afan de Ribera y de Moura. She was the Duchess of Alcalà de los Gazules. Sadly, Maria passed away in 1638, and they did not have any children together.

Later, he married Catalina de Moncada y de Moncada y de Castro y Alagon. She was born on August 21, 1611. Her father was Francisco de Moncada, 3rd Marquis of Aitona. Luis and Catalina had one son named Fernando de Aragón y Moncada, who was born in 1644.

Becoming a Cardinal

After his second wife, Catalina, passed away around 1660, Luis decided to become a priest. He was about 48 years old at the time. In 1667, he received a very high honor in the Catholic Church. He was made a Cardinal by Pope Clement IX. This meant he became a very important leader in the Church.

As a Cardinal, he represented the Papal States (the lands ruled by the Pope) in Madrid. He held this important role until he passed away.

Death and Burial

Luis Guillermo de Moncada passed away on May 4, 1672, in Madrid. He was first buried in the tomb of his first father-in-law, the Duke of Alcalá de los Gazules. This tomb was located in the Capuchin convent of San Antonio in Madrid.

However, in 1674, his remains were moved. According to his wishes, he was reburied in the church of San Domenico Maggiore in Naples.
