Luis Maldonado Venegas (born November 19, 1956 – died April 30, 2019) was an important Mexican politician and lawyer. He was a member of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). He served as a federal deputy, which is like a representative in the Mexican Congress, for Mexico City. He also led a political party called Convergencia (now Movimiento Ciudadano) and represented it in both parts of the Mexican Congress.

Life and Career
Starting in Politics: The PRI Years
Luis Maldonado Venegas began his political journey in 1974 when he joined the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). At the same time, he studied law at the UNAM and another law school. He started working for the government in different roles.
In the early 1980s, he taught at UNAM. He also worked as the director general for the Historic Center of Mexico City. Later, he held positions in government departments related to fisheries and nutrition.
During the 1990s, Maldonado Venegas taught administrative law. He also worked for the Secretariat of Public Education, which is like the Ministry of Education. In 1994, he helped with the PRI's presidential campaign. After the election, he worked in the Secretariat of the Interior, a key government department. He even acted as a messenger during important meetings between the government and a group called the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN).
He continued to be active in the PRI, serving as a national secretary. He also led the Mexican Society of Geography and Statistics for two terms.
Joining Convergencia
In 2000, after 26 years, Luis Maldonado Venegas left the PRI. He then joined a new political party called Convergencia. By 2003, he became a federal deputy for Convergencia. In this role, he helped lead the party's group in Congress. He also worked on many important committees, including those for budget, constitutional rules, and public safety.
In 2006, he became the national president of Convergencia for three years. He also became an alternate senator. When the main senator, Luis Walton, took a leave of absence, Maldonado Venegas stepped in. He served as a senator for about three years. As a senator, he led the Convergencia group and worked on committees dealing with public security, tourism, and justice. He also represented the legislature on the Federal Electoral Institute's council, which oversees elections.
In 2011, Maldonado Venegas left the Senate. He then took on important roles in the state government of Puebla. He served as the state secretary of public education, overseeing schools and learning. Later, he became the secretary general of government for Puebla, a very senior position.
Moving to the PRD
In 2014, Luis Maldonado Venegas joined another major political party, the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). He quickly became a national coordinator for the party.
In 2015, he was again chosen to be a federal deputy for the PRD. In this final role, he led the committee that oversees the Superior Auditor of the Federation, which checks how the government spends money. He also worked on committees related to urban development and public education.
Luis Maldonado Venegas passed away on April 30, 2019.
