Luis Rodríguez Moya, known to many as Luis Moya, is a famous Spanish former rally co-driver. He is especially known for his strong partnership with the legendary driver Carlos Sainz. Luis Moya is one of the most successful co-drivers in the history of the World Rally Championship (WRC). He was born in A Coruña, Spain, on September 23, 1960.
Luis Moya's Rally Career
Luis Moya spent his entire World Rally Championship career as a co-driver for his fellow Spaniard, Carlos Sainz. A co-driver's job is to read pace notes to the driver. These notes describe the road ahead, helping the driver know when to turn, brake, or accelerate.
Together, Luis Moya and Carlos Sainz achieved great success. They won two World Rally Championship titles, first in 1990 and again in 1992.
Victories and Teams
Throughout his career, Luis Moya helped Carlos Sainz win 24 world rally events. This is a huge number of victories! They competed for several well-known car manufacturers. These included Subaru, Toyota, and Ford.
Luis Moya retired from his role as a co-driver at the end of the 2002 season. After he retired, another Spanish co-driver, Marc Martí, took his place with Carlos Sainz.
Post-Rally Career
After his time as a co-driver, Luis Moya continued to work in the world of rallying. From 2003 to 2006, he served as the Sporting Director for the Subaru World Rally Team. In this role, he helped manage the team's activities and strategies.
Later, Luis Moya joined the Volkswagen Motorsport rally team. He became an ambassador for the Volkswagen brand. This means he helped represent the company and promote their involvement in rallying.
Luis Moya's record of individual wins was later surpassed by other famous co-drivers. These include Daniel Elena, who co-drove for Sébastien Loeb, and Timo Rautiainen, who co-drove for Marcus Grönholm. However, Luis Moya remains a highly respected figure in rally history.
