Luis Pizaño was an important Spanish military engineer and a Captain General of Artillery. He is famous for his work building and improving strong defenses, called fortifications, in areas like Catalonia and the Basque Country in Spain.
A Master Builder of Forts
Luis Pizaño was a skilled engineer who knew how to design and build strong castles and walls to protect cities from attacks. These protective structures are called fortifications. He was also a Captain General of Artillery, which meant he was in charge of cannons and other big weapons used in wars.
Improving City Defenses
In 1540, Pizaño told the king's advisors that the city walls of San Sebastián were not strong enough and needed to be made bigger. From 1542 to 1544, he helped rebuild and strengthen the walls of San Sebastián. This made the city much safer.
Working for King Charles V
In 1543, King Charles V put Luis Pizaño in charge of building the Castell de la Trinitat and other important structures in Roses, Girona. The Castell de la Trinitat was a very important fortress. Building work on this castle started on January 2, 1544. Luis Pizaño worked on it until he died in 1550. After his death, another engineer from Italy, Pietro di Giacomo Cataneo, finished the castle in mid-1551.
