Castell de la Trinitat

The Castell de la Trinitat is an old castle located near the town of Roses in Catalonia, Spain. It sits on the beautiful Gulf of Roses. This castle, along with the nearby Ciutadella de Roses, helped protect the town of Roses a long time ago.

Building the Castle

The castle got its name from a small chapel built in 1508. This chapel, and an old defense tower, were taken down to make way for the new castle.

The powerful Emperor Charles V ordered the castle to be built in 1543. Construction started on January 2, 1544. The castle was finished in mid-1551, thanks to the Spanish engineer Luis Pizano.

A Star-Shaped Fortress

The Castell de la Trinitat was designed in a special five-pointed star shape. This unique design made it very strong for defense. The castle walls are very thick, and the building stands about 18 to 20 meters (about 60 to 65 feet) tall. It was built to hold a group of about 350 soldiers.

A Battle and Restoration

In 1808, the castle faced a big challenge. Sailors from the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, led by Captain Thomas, Lord Cochrane, defended it for twelve days. They were helped by local Catalan soldiers. French and Italian armies attacked the castle, causing damage. To prevent the French from using the castle's sea entrance, Captain Cochrane made sure some gunpowder barrels exploded.

After this battle, the castle was left empty for almost 200 years. It was declared an important cultural landmark in 1988. Between 2002 and 2010, the castle was carefully restored. This big project cost about 2 million euros. The Castell de la Trinitat reopened to the public on September 26, 2010, and now it even has a museum!
