Luis de Velasco Rami, born in 1939 in Valencia, Spain, is a well-known Spanish economist, writer, and politician. He has held important roles in the Spanish government. He served as a deputy, which is like a representative in the country's parliament, and also as a Secretary of State for Commerce.
For many years, he was a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). Later, he joined another political group called Union, Progress and Democracy (UPyD).

Luis de Velasco's Early Life and Education
Luis de Velasco was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1939. He lived there until 1961. During this time, he studied law at the University of Valencia and earned his degree.
After finishing his law studies, he spent two years living in London and Dublin. In 1964, he passed special exams to work for the government. He then joined the Ministry of Commerce. At the same time, he also earned a degree in economics.
His Career in Politics
Between 1967 and 1973, Luis de Velasco lived in Chile. He worked there for the Spanish Office of Commerce. In 1976, he returned to Spain and joined the PSOE political party.
Serving in the Spanish Congress
From 1986 to 1989, he was a deputy in the Congress of Spain. He represented the region of Navarre. During this period, he also served as the Secretary of State of Commerce. This role meant he helped manage Spain's trade with other countries. In 1994, he decided to leave the PSOE party.
Role in the Madrid Assembly
Luis de Velasco later became a member of the 9th Madrid Assembly. This is the regional parliament for the Madrid area. He was chosen as the UPyD candidate to become the president of the Madrid region.
In the elections, he received more than 6% of the votes. This placed him fourth among the candidates. Because of this result, he and seven other members of his party entered the Madrid Assembly as deputies.
On October 23, 2010, he was chosen in primary elections to lead the UPyD list for the 2011 elections. These elections were for the Assembly of Madrid. In the elections held on May 22, 2011, the UPyD party, led by Luis de Velasco, received 6.30% of the votes. This allowed them to gain eight deputies in the Madrid Assembly.
