Luitgard Veraart facts for kids
Luitgard Anna Maria Veraart is a German mathematician. She uses math to understand money and how banks work. She helps figure out, predict, and handle the dangers linked to how banks and money systems are connected. She is a professor of mathematics at the London School of Economics.
Her Journey in Math
Luitgard Veraart studied at the University of Ulm in Germany. In 2004, she earned two degrees there. One was in mathematics, and the other was in mathematics and economics.
Before that, in 2003, she also earned a master's degree. This was in statistical science from the University of Cambridge in the UK. She continued her studies at Cambridge. In 2007, she earned a special advanced degree called a Ph.D.
After her Ph.D., she worked as a researcher at Princeton University. In 2008, she became a professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. She taught financial mathematics there. In 2010, she moved to the London School of Economics. She started as a lecturer. She became an associate professor in 2013. Then, in 2021, she became a full professor.
Awards and Roles
In 2019, Luitgard Veraart won a big award. It was the Adams Prize from the University of Cambridge. She shared the prize with another mathematician, Heather Harrington. They won for their work on the math of networks.
The award recognized Veraart for her special work. She created new ways to understand how banks are connected. Her work helps make sure money systems stay strong. It also helps prevent big problems in banking networks.
In 2022, she was chosen for an important role. She became Vice Chair of a group called SIAM SIAG/FME. This group is part of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. It focuses on using math for money and engineering.
