A Sailor's Life

Luke M. Griswold was born in Massachusetts in 1837. He joined the U.S. Navy from Springfield, Massachusetts. Griswold served on a ship called the U.S.S. Rhode Island. He passed away in 1892.

A Daring Rescue

On December 30, 1862, a ship named the U.S.S. Monitor was caught in a big storm. It began to sink near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The U.S.S. Rhode Island, where Griswold served, came to help. Their mission was to rescue the crew of the sinking Monitor.

Bravery in the Storm

Luke Griswold was part of a small boat crew sent from the Rhode Island. They worked hard to save the sailors from the Monitor. Griswold helped rescue several men from the stormy seas.

Lost at Sea

After rescuing some sailors, Griswold's small boat got separated from the Rhode Island. The storm was very strong, and the waves were huge. Griswold and his crewmates spent many hours lost at sea. They were at the mercy of the rough weather. Finally, another ship, a schooner, found them. They were picked up about 50 miles east of Cape Hatteras.
