Lundeberg Derby Monument facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The "Lundeberg Derby Monument" is a special statue in Seattle, Washington. It was created in 1987 as part of a project to make First Street look nicer. This monument honors Harry Lundeberg, an important leader who helped sailors get fair rights.

The statue is located at First and Wall Street. It was put there by an artist named Buster Simpson. At that time, the building behind it, called the 'El Gaucho Inn,' was owned by the Sailor's Union. Harry Lundeberg was a key person in the Sailor's Union Strike of 1886. He even helped create a special cap, which later became known as the "Lundeberg Stetson." Members of the Union still wear this cap today.

The monument has two pillars, which are like tall posts, about three feet high. On top of one pillar sits a derby cap, just like the ones worn by members of the Sailor's Union. These pillars were saved from a rock quarry by artists Jack Mackie and Buster Simpson, who were both involved in the First Avenue Project.

What's on the Cap?

The cap on the monument has three special buttons. Each button tells a part of the story about workers' rights and unions.

Pete Gill's Button

The first button says 'Pete Gill, 43, Book no'. When a sailor joins a union, they get a unique union number. This number helps identify them within the group.

The Sailor's Union of the Pacific

The second button represents the S.U.P., which stands for the Sailors' Union of the Pacific. This union was first formed on March 6, 1885, as the Coast Seamen's Union. It later became known as the Sailor's Union of the Pacific. The button also mentions the Brotherhood of the Sea.

Industrial Workers of the World

The third button is for the Industrial Workers of the World, also known as the IWW or the "Wobblies". This group was started in 1905 by people who wanted big changes for workers. Many of its members were workers who traveled a lot, especially from mines and forests in the western United States. They were also interested in the American Federation of Labor, another large group that helped workers.
