The Lusitania Bridge is a modern bridge located in Mérida, Spain. It's an important crossing over the Guadiana River.
Building the Lusitania Bridge
The Lusitania Bridge was built in 1991. A group of Spanish companies worked together to construct it. Its main purpose was to help with traffic. It took cars and trucks off the much older Roman Bridge. This helped protect the ancient Roman structure.
The famous architect Santiago Calatrava designed this bridge. He is known for his unique and modern designs.
The bridge gets its name from "Lusitania." This was an ancient Roman province. The city of Mérida, then called Emerita Augusta, used to be its capital. So, the name connects the new bridge to the area's rich Roman history.
