Lydia Marie Clarke Heston (born April 14, 1923 – died September 3, 2018) was an American actress and photographer. She was known for her roles in movies and TV shows. She also traveled the world taking amazing pictures.

Lydia Clarke grew up and went to high school in Lexington, Kentucky. She later graduated from Northwestern University. She first thought about becoming a lawyer. However, after a famous poet named Carl Sandburg saw her act, she decided to become an actress instead.

Acting Career

Lydia Clarke performed on Broadway, which is a famous theater district in New York City. She played the character Mary McLeod in a play called Detective Story in 1949. She also appeared on a television show called Studio One.

Her first movie role was in the big film The Greatest Show on Earth in 1952. This movie was very popular. She also acted in other films like The Atomic City and Bad for Each Other.

Photography Work

Besides acting, Lydia Clarke was a talented photographer. She took pictures all over the world. Her photos showed many different places and people. For example, she photographed Afghan refugees and villagers in Egypt.

Her work was so good that famous magazines like Time and Fortune published her pictures. She also showed her photographs in museums and art galleries. She even had her work featured in two books.

Family Life

Lydia Clarke married the famous actor Charlton Heston on March 17, 1944. Their marriage lasted for 64 years. Charlton Heston passed away in 2008. They had two children together: Fraser Clarke Heston and Holly Heston Rochell.

Lydia and Charlton also worked together in theater. They were both directors and actors at the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Theatre in Asheville, North Carolina.

Later Years

Lydia Clarke passed away on September 3, 2018. She was 95 years old. She died from complications related to pneumonia in Santa Monica, California.
