Ionian lydion MAR Palermo NI1779
This ancient lydion vase shows stripe decoration. It was made in Ionia during the 6th century BC.

The lydion (pronounced LID-ee-on) was a special type of ancient Greek vase. It was often used to hold perfumes or oils. This unique vase shape might have originally come from ancient Egypt.

The lydion got its name because it first appeared in Lydia, an ancient kingdom. Potters in Greece soon started making them too. These small, round containers did not have handles. They were very popular in East Greece.

What Did a Lydion Look Like?

A lydion vase usually stood on a tall, thin foot. This foot could be shaped like a cylinder or a cone. The neck of the vase varied in length. It joined the main body at a sharp angle. The top edge, or lip, of the vase was flat.

Decoration and Use

Most lydia were decorated with simple stripes. It was rare to find them with detailed pictures or figures. In the famous city of Athens, lydia were not made very often. If they were, figural decoration was even rarer. These small vases were perfect for holding valuable perfumes or scented oils. People likely used them for personal care or in religious ceremonies.
