Lyncoya Jackson (also known as Lincoyer, born around 1811 – died July 1, 1828) was a Creek Native American child. He was adopted and raised by Andrew Jackson, who later became a U.S. President, and his wife, Rachel Jackson.

Lyncoya's Early Life

Lyncoya was born to Creek parents. The Creek people are also known as the Muscogee. Sadly, Lyncoya became an orphan during the Creek War. This war happened between 1813 and 1814. He lost his family after a battle called the Battle of Tallushatchee.

How Andrew Jackson Found Lyncoya

After the Battle of Tallushatchee, Andrew Jackson found Lyncoya. The women who survived the battle were too hurt to care for the child. Jackson felt very sorry for the young orphan. He wrote that he felt a special connection to the child. This might have been because Jackson himself had been an orphan when he was young. Jackson decided to protect Lyncoya. He sent the child to be raised by his wife, Rachel, while he continued to lead his army.

Life with the Jacksons

Lyncoya arrived at the Jackson family home, called the Hermitage, in 1813. He grew up there with Andrew Jackson's first adopted son, Andrew Jackson Jr.

Lyncoya's Education and Future Plans

Lyncoya received an education alongside Andrew Jackson Jr. Andrew Jackson had big hopes for Lyncoya. He even wanted to send him to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. This is a famous school for training army officers. However, it turned out to be impossible for Lyncoya to attend West Point.

Instead, Lyncoya began learning a trade. He became an apprentice to a saddle maker. An apprentice learns a skill by working with an experienced person. Lyncoya was learning to make saddles for horses.

Lyncoya's Passing

Lyncoya Jackson died on July 1, 1828. He was around 17 years old. He passed away from a serious illness called tuberculosis.
