Catherine McClure was born in 1952. She studied at University College London and the University of Oxford. She also earned master's degrees from other universities.

She started her career as a math teacher for both primary and secondary school students. Later, she became a main lecturer in education at Oxford Brookes University and then at the University of Edinburgh. Before leading Cambridge Mathematics, she directed the NRICH and Underground Maths Projects. These projects help students and teachers with math.

In 2022, Catherine McClure received a special award called the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). This award recognizes people who have done amazing things for their country, and hers was for her great work in education.

Catherine McClure has also held important leadership roles. She was the president of the Mathematical Association from 2014 to 2015. She also led the International Society for Design and Development in Education.
