Lyon Hall, also called the Lyon-Lamar House, is a beautiful old mansion in Demopolis, Alabama, United States. It's built in the Greek Revival style, which means it looks a bit like ancient Greek temples. A man named George Gaines Lyon and his wife, Anne Glover Lyon, had it built over three years. George Lyon was a lawyer, and his uncle, Francis Strother Lyon, lived nearby in another famous house called Bluff Hall.

The Story of Lyon Hall

George Lyon started building this grand house in 1850. It took him three years to finish, finally being ready in 1853. Once the house was complete, George and Anne Lyon traveled all the way to New York City. They went there to buy furniture and decorate their new home.

The Lyon family and their descendants lived in Lyon Hall for a very long time. They stayed there until 1996, when George Gaines Lyon Lamar, a family member, passed away. In May 1997, the house was given to the Marengo County Historical Society. This group now takes care of the historic building.

What Lyon Hall Looks Like

Lyon Hall is a two-story house made of wood. Its outside walls are covered with clapboard, which are long, thin wooden boards that overlap. The front of the house has a large porch, called a portico. This porch has six tall, square columns that reach up two stories high. These columns are made of brick and covered with a smooth finish called stucco. They look very similar to the columns on nearby Bluff Hall.

An upper balcony stretches across the entire front of the house, connecting to these impressive columns. The roof of Lyon Hall is a hipped roof, meaning all sides slope downwards to the walls. At the very top of the roof, there is a small tower-like structure called a belvedere. This belvedere would have offered great views of the surrounding area.
