Lyrica started her music career in the 1970s as an Ikette with the famous group Ike & Tina Turner. Early Life and Music Start
Marcy Thomas was born in Houston, Texas on December 8, 1950. She showed a talent for music from a young age. When she was just twelve years old, she became the music director for a youth choir. By the time she was fifteen, she was already writing her own songs and performing them.
Joining Ike & Tina Turner
In 1974, Marcy successfully tried out for bandleader Ike Turner. She became an Ikette, which was a backup singer and dancer for the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. She traveled all over the world with them. They appeared on many TV shows, including Musikladen, Soul Train, and The Midnight Special. She left the Ikettes in 1975.
Music and Acting Career
After leaving the Ikettes, Marcy Thomas continued to build her career. In 1976, she joined the touring musical show The Wiz. This was a popular play, and she performed with it for two years.
Singing with The Undisputed Truth
In 1978, Marcy joined the funk music group The Undisputed Truth. She became the main female singer for their album Smokin' in 1979. She also sang backup for Rick James on his very successful album Street Songs in 1981.
Acting Roles
Besides her music, Lyrica Garrett also acted in movies. She had roles in the films Penitentiary II in 1982 and Perfume in 1991.
Later Music and Performances
Marcy Thomas rejoined Ike Turner as an Ikette in 1988. Later, she started using the professional name Lyrica Garrett. She toured with Ike Turner again in 2006. They performed famous songs like "River Deep, Mountain High" and "Proud Mary" at a music event called Night of the Proms. She also performed with the band Tears for Fears.
Reality TV and Recent Work
In 2016, Lyrica Garrett joined the TV show Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood. This was a reality show that also featured her daughter, Lyrica Anderson. The show showed some of the challenges in Lyrica Garrett's relationship with her son-in-law, A1 Bentley, and his mother.
In 2019, Lyrica Garrett released a music video for her song "Summertime Love." This song was from her album called Ready. The album was produced by Dalvin DeGrate.
