Lysimachia maritima is a cool plant that belongs to the Primulaceae family. It used to be known as Glaux maritima. You might also hear people call it sea milkwort, sea milkweed, or black saltwort. It's a unique plant found in different parts of the world.
Where This Plant Grows
Lysimachia maritima grows all around the northern part of the world. This means you can find it in Europe, central Asia, and North America. In Europe, it mostly lives near the coast, like by the sea. But in Asia and North America, it can also grow inland. It likes wet places, even in water! You can even find it in salty, alkaline meadows in desert areas, like in Utah. It can grow very high up, sometimes as high as 2,600 meters (about 8,500 feet) above sea level.
What Lysimachia maritima Looks Like
This plant is special because its flowers are different from others in its family. Unlike most flowers, it doesn't have true petals. Instead, its calyx (the outer part of the flower that usually protects the petals) is pink and looks like petals. This plant usually has five parts in its calyx and also in its seed capsule. Its leaves are thick and fleshy, like they hold water. They are simple in shape and grow opposite each other on the stem.
