Lyudmila Zhuravleva facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lyudmila Vasilyevna Zhuravleva is a famous astronomer from the Soviet Union, Russia, and Ukraine. She was born on May 22, 1946. She worked at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Nauchnij.

Lyudmila Zhuravleva is well-known for discovering many minor planets. Minor planets are small objects in space, like asteroids, that orbit the Sun. She discovered a total of 213 minor planets! This makes her one of the most successful discoverers of these space objects.

Among her discoveries are the Trojan asteroid 4086 Podalirius and the asteroid 2374 Vladvysotskij. A Trojan asteroid is a special type of asteroid that shares an orbit with a larger planet, like Jupiter.

Her work took place between 1972 and 1992. She is credited with discovering 200 minor planets on her own. She also helped discover 13 more with other astronomers. Because of her many discoveries, she is ranked very highly among astronomers who find minor planets.

To honor her contributions to astronomy, one main-belt asteroid was named after her. This asteroid is called 26087 Zhuravleva. It was discovered by her colleague, Lyudmila Karachkina, at the same observatory.

Discoveries in Space

Lyudmila Zhuravleva spent many years looking at the night sky. She used telescopes at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. This observatory is a special place where scientists study stars and planets.

Her job was to find new objects in our solar system. When she found a new minor planet, she would record its position and movement. This information helps scientists learn more about our solar system.

She discovered many asteroids that were later named after famous people or places. For example, she discovered 2374 Vladvysotskij, named after a famous Russian singer and actor. She also found 4086 Podalirius, which is a Trojan asteroid.

Her discoveries are very important for astronomy. They help us understand the history of our solar system. They also help us track objects that might come close to Earth.

Honoring an Astronomer

It is a great honor to have a celestial body named after you. The asteroid 26087 Zhuravleva was named to celebrate Lyudmila Zhuravleva's hard work. This shows how much her fellow scientists respected her.

Naming an asteroid after a person is a way to remember their achievements forever. It means that her legacy will continue to orbit the Sun for millions of years.
