László Kövér (born 29 December 1959) is a Hungarian politician. He is currently the Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary. This means he leads the Hungarian parliament. Because of his role as Speaker, he has also served as the acting president of Hungary two times. The first time was from April to May 2012, after the previous president, Pál Schmitt, resigned. The second time was from February to March 2024, after Katalin Novák resigned.

László Kövér was one of the people who helped start the Fidesz political party in 1988. He was also a minister in the government of Viktor Orbán, in charge of civilian intelligence services. He became the leader of the Fidesz party in 2000, but he stepped down from that role the next year.

László Kövér was born in a town called Pápa. He was one of the first people to join the Fidesz party. He was involved in important discussions in 1989 that helped Hungary change its political system.

Early Career and Parliament

Kövér has been a member of the Hungarian Parliament since 1990. He is now the chairman of the Fidesz party's board. He used to lead his party's group in the Parliament and was in charge of the Committee on National Security for two terms. From 1998 to 2000, he was a minister in the first government led by Viktor Orbán. In this role, he oversaw civilian national security services. After this, he was chosen as the President of Fidesz, a position he held until 2001.

Speaker of the National Assembly

László Kövér was first chosen as the Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary on 22 July 2010. He officially started this job on 5 August, after the previous Speaker, Pál Schmitt, became the President of Hungary.

Kövér has been re-elected as the Speaker of the Parliament several times. He was chosen again on 6 May 2014, 8 May 2018, and 2 May 2022.

Acting President of Hungary

As Speaker of the Parliament, László Kövér has served as acting president of Hungary twice.

  • First time (2012): On 2 April 2012, President Pál Schmitt resigned. According to Hungary's constitution, the Speaker of the National Assembly becomes the acting president. The Parliament then had 30 days to choose a new president.
  • Second time (2024): On 10 February 2024, President Katalin Novák resigned. This meant László Kövér took on the role of acting president once more.

Personal Life

László Kövér married Mária Bekk in 1987. She is a high school teacher who teaches history and ethnography. They have three children: Vajk, born in 1988; Botond, born in 1989; and Csenge, born in 1994.

His family has a varied background. His grandfather on his father's side was a carpenter and was involved in different socialist parties. His mother's family came from the middle class, and his maternal grandfather was a taxi driver. His parents were László Kövér Sr. and Erzsébet Ábrahám. He also has a brother named Szilárd, who is a lawyer.

After the 2006 election, when his party Fidesz lost, Kövér said he would not cut his hair until Fidesz formed a government again. Four years later, in 2010, Fidesz won a large majority. Kövér then appeared with short hair at the opening of the new parliamentary term. In 2017, he also cut his famous mustache, which had been a well-known part of his look.
