László Kövér (born December 29, 1959) is a Hungarian politician. He is currently the Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary. This means he leads the Hungarian parliament. He has also been the acting president of Hungary two times. This happened in 2012 and again in 2024, after the previous presidents resigned.
Kövér was one of the people who started the Fidesz political party in 1988. He served as a minister in charge of civilian intelligence services from 1998 to 2000. He was also the leader of the Fidesz party for a short time, from 2000 to 2001.

Political Journey
László Kövér was born in a town called Pápa. He helped create the Fidesz party. He was part of important discussions in 1989 that helped Hungary change its government.
He has been a member of the Hungarian Parliament since 1990. He has also led his political group in the parliament. For two terms, he was in charge of the Committee on National Security. This committee deals with the country's safety and security.
Becoming Speaker
Kövér was chosen to be the Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary on July 22, 2010. He officially started this job on August 5, 2010. He took over from Pál Schmitt, who became the President of Hungary.
Kövér has been re-elected as the Speaker of the parliament several times. He was re-elected on May 6, 2014, May 8, 2018, and May 2, 2022.
Acting President
László Kövér has served as the acting president of Hungary twice. The first time was on April 2, 2012. This happened after President Pál Schmitt resigned. According to the Constitution of Hungary, the Speaker of the National Assembly becomes acting president in such cases.
He became acting president again on February 10, 2024. This was after President Katalin Novák resigned. When he is acting president, one of the deputy speakers takes over his duties as Speaker of Parliament.
About His Life
László Kövér's family has a history of public service. His grandfather was a carpenter and involved in political parties. His maternal grandparents were from the middle class. His mother, Erzsébet Ábrahám, was born in 1939. His father, László Kövér Sr., was a locksmith. László Kövér has a brother named Szilárd, who is a lawyer.
Kövér married Mária Bekk in 1987. She is a high school teacher. They have three children: Vajk, born in 1988; Botond, born in 1989; and Csenge, born in 1994.
After the 2006 election, when his party lost, Kövér made a promise. He said he would not cut his hair until Fidesz could form a government again. Four years later, in 2010, his party won a large majority of seats. Kövér then appeared with short hair. In 2017, he also cut his mustache, which had been a well-known part of his look.
