Mårten Hans Hagström (born April 27, 1971) is a talented musician from Sweden. He is most famous as the rhythm guitarist for the band Meshuggah. Mårten joined Meshuggah after their first album came out. This allowed their singer, Jens Kidman, to focus only on singing.
Mårten and his bandmate, Fredrik Thordendal, are known for their very complex guitar playing. Mårten has said that bands like Rush and artists like James Hetfield inspired him.

About Mårten Hagström
Mårten believes that playing an instrument is a way to express your feelings. He once said that music helps you get what's in your heart and mind out into the world. When he first started playing guitar, many guitarists focused on fast, fancy solos. But Mårten decided to focus on creating his own unique and detailed rhythm guitar style instead.
His Role in Meshuggah
Even though Fredrik Thordendal often plays most of Meshuggah's guitar solos, Mårten helps write many of the band's songs. He wrote important songs like "Nebulous" from the album Nothing. He also wrote "Acrid Placidity" from Destroy Erase Improve and "Neurotica" from Chaosphere.
On the album obZen, Mårten also played some slower, melodic guitar parts. These were on songs he wrote, such as "Electric Red" and "Pravus". This showed his skill beyond just rhythm guitar.
Mårten also helps write the lyrics for some of Meshuggah's songs. He worked with the band's drummer, Tomas Haake, on the album Catch 33. He also wrote all the lyrics for their special EP called I. Mårten and Tomas have been making music together since they were nine years old.
Mårten Hagström and Fredrik Thordendal are highly respected guitarists. They were ranked among the top 100 greatest heavy metal guitarists of all time by Guitar World magazine.

Mårten uses special guitars to create Meshuggah's unique sound.
Guitars
Mårten's main guitar is an Ibanez Custom 8-String M8M. This guitar has a special body shape and a long neck. It uses a single powerful pickup called a Lundgren Model 8. He uses thick guitar strings, which are tuned very low.
In the past, Mårten and Fredrik used Ibanez 7-string guitars. Later, they switched to Nevborn 8-string guitars. However, these guitars were not always stable during tours. So, they worked with Ibanez to create custom 8-string guitars that were more reliable.
Mårten also had a custom Ibanez M8M guitar made with a shorter neck. This helps him play more easily because of some shoulder issues. He also uses another Ibanez 8-string guitar for his live shows.
