Mohamed Ehuttar Hadjiar Maharoof (born January 5, 1939 – died July 20, 1997) was an important politician from Sri Lanka. He served as a Member of Parliament for many years. He worked to represent the people of his area in the Sri Lankan government.
Early Life and Family Background
Mohamed Ehuttar Hadjiar Maharoof was born on January 5, 1939. His father was the chairman of the Kinniya Village Council. This meant his father was a local leader in their community. Maharoof's brother, M. E. H. Mohamed Ali, was also a notable figure.
He attended several schools during his youth. These included Zahira College, Matale, Trincomalee Hindu College, St. Anthony's College, Kandy, and Pembroke Academy in Colombo.
Maharoof's son, Imran, has also followed in his father's footsteps. Imran is a provincial councillor and a Member of Parliament today.
Political Career and Public Service
Maharoof decided to enter politics in 1965. This happened after his father passed away unexpectedly. From 1966 to 1971, he served as the chairman of the Kinniya Town Council. This role involved leading the local government in Kinniya.
In 1977, Maharoof ran for election as a candidate for the United National Party (UNP). He successfully won the election in the Mutur area. This victory allowed him to become a member of the Sri Lankan Parliament. In 1978, he was given the role of District Minister for Mannar.
Maharoof was re-elected to Parliament in 1989. He ran as a UNP candidate for the Trincomalee District. In 1990, he was appointed as the Minister of State for Ports and Shipping. He was elected again in the 1994 parliamentary election.
He was known for having good relationships with the Tamil people in the Trincomalee District. He also disagreed with the idea of creating a separate provincial council just for Muslims in the South Eastern region.
His Passing
On the morning of July 20, 1997, Maharoof was traveling in his jeep. He was on the Kuchchaveli Road, heading towards Irakakkandy. Sadly, his vehicle was attacked near the 6th Mile Post, between Trincomalee and Nilaveli.
In this tragic event, Maharoof and five other people lost their lives. These included his driver, a bodyguard, a colleague, a school principal, and the driver's four-year-old son. It was a very sad day for Sri Lanka.
