Mohamed Haniffa Mohamed (born June 15, 1921, died April 26, 2016) was an important politician from Sri Lanka. He was the 14th Speaker of Parliament, which is like the leader of the country's main law-making body. He also served as a Member of Parliament and a government minister. Mr. Mohamed made history as the first Sri Lankan Moor to become the Mayor of Colombo, leading the city from 1960 to 1962.

Early Life and Education
Mohamed Haniffa Mohamed was born on June 15, 1921, in Maligawatta, Colombo. He went to school at Wesley College, Colombo. After finishing school, he started working at Cargills Ltd.. There, he became involved in trade unions, which are groups that protect workers' rights.
Later, he joined his family's shipping business, Nagoor Meera and Sons. His grandfather, Marhoom Abdur Rahman, was also a public servant. He was a member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon, which was an important governing body a long time ago.
Political Journey and Roles
Mohamed Haniffa Mohamed began his political career in the Colombo Municipal Council. He was elected from the Maligawatte area. He then served as the Mayor of Colombo from 1960 to 1962. This role meant he was the main leader of the city.
Entering Parliament
In 1965, he ran for a seat in Parliament in the general elections. He was a candidate for the United National Party. He won the election in the Borella electorate, beating the candidate from the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP).
He lost his seat in the 1970 general elections. However, he was re-elected to Parliament in the 1977 general elections. After that, he kept his seat in every election until 2010, serving for many years.
Cabinet Minister and Speaker
In 1977, he was chosen by President J.R. Jayawardena to join the Cabinet. He became the Minister of Transport. This meant he was in charge of things like roads, trains, and public transport for the country.
Later, he became the 14th Speaker of Parliament. This is a very important role, as the Speaker leads the discussions and makes sure rules are followed in Parliament. He also held other ministerial positions, including Minister of Western Region Development and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs.
