Maniyankode Padmaprabha Veerendra Kumar (born 22 July 1936 – died 28 May 2020) was an important person in India. He was a politician, a writer, and a journalist. He served as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, which is one of the two houses of India's Parliament.

He was also the president of the Loktantrik Janata Dal political party in Kerala. Besides his political work, he was the chairman and managing director of a well-known Malayalam daily newspaper called Mathrubhumi.

Early Life and Education

Veerendra Kumar was born on 22 July 1936 in Kalpetta, Kerala. His parents were Marudevi Avva and M. K. Padmaprabha Goudar. His father was also a well-known political leader.

He was the oldest of eight children, with six younger sisters and one younger brother. He went to school in Kalpetta and Kozhikode. Later, he earned a master's degree in philosophy from the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College.

A Career in Politics

Veerendra Kumar was very active in politics from a young age. He held many important roles in different socialist parties. He was a treasurer and a national committee member of the Samyukta Socialist Party. He also served as the state secretary for the Socialist Party in Kerala.

From 1987 to 1991, he was a member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. This is like being a representative for his home state.

Serving the Nation

In 1996, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Kozhikode area. The Lok Sabha is the lower house of the Parliament of India. He served as a Union Minister of State for Finance for a short time in 1997.

Later, he also worked as a Union Minister of State for Labour. This role meant he was in charge of important decisions about workers' rights. He also handled duties for Urban Affairs and Employment.

He was again elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004. He continued to work for the people of India through his political roles.

Later Life and Legacy

M. P. Veerendra Kumar passed away on 28 May 2020 in Kozhikode, Kerala. He was 83 years old. He was honored with a state funeral in Kalpetta.

He is remembered by his wife, Usha, and their four children: Asha, Nisha, Jayalakshmi, and M.V. Sreyamskumar. His son, M.V. Sreyamskumar, also became a politician and now manages the Mathrubhumi newspaper.

Veerendra Kumar was recognized for his contributions to literature and society.
