Building History
In 2005, a company named Jamison Properties bought the MCI Center. They paid over $100 million for the building. This purchase also included a nearby shopping area, which was known as Broadway Plaza and later Macy's Plaza. It also came with a large parking garage that could hold 3,000 cars.
The Bloc Project
In 2013, a new owner, the Ratkovich Company, took over the property. They decided to give the area a big makeover. After a new design by Johnson Fain Architects, the entire plaza was renamed "The Bloc."
The original building looked a bit like a fortress with its brick walls. The redesign changed this by removing the old brick and glass atrium. This made the ground level more open and friendly for people walking by.
Connecting to the Subway
A special part of "The Bloc" project was creating an open public area below the ground. This new area connects directly to the 7th Street / Metro Center Station. This was the first time a private building in Los Angeles connected directly to a subway station.
Past Tenants
Over the years, several important organizations have had offices in the MCI Center.
Metrolink Headquarters
For a time, Metrolink had its main offices in the MCI Center. Metrolink is a train system that helps people travel around Southern California. By the year 2000, Metrolink had grown its space in the building to about 40,000 square feet (3,700 m2).
In June 2011, Metrolink moved its headquarters. They moved to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) building. This new location is at 1 Gateway Plaza near Los Angeles Union Station.
La Opinión Offices
The offices for La Opinión newspaper are also located in the MCI Center. This newspaper is a major Spanish-language newspaper in Los Angeles. ImpreMedia Digital, a digital media company, also has offices in the building.
