The MV Cygnet: A Lake Boat

The MV Cygnet was an important boat for the communities around Skaha Lake. It was built to provide ferry services. This meant it carried passengers and freight. The boat helped connect different areas around the lake.

Building and Purpose

The Cygnet was built in 1911 by Summerland Boat Works. It was made for the South Okanagan Transportation Company. This company was owned by James Fraser Campbell and A. S. Hatfield. The Cygnet was meant to replace an older tugboat called the Kaleden.

How the Engine Worked

The Cygnet had a special Fairbanks marine engine. Starting this engine was quite unique. You had to turn a large flywheel. This was done using a steel bar that fit into special slots on the wheel. It was a hands-on way to get the boat moving!

Later Life and Sale

In the early 1920s, the Cygnet moved to Okanagan Lake. For one summer, it carried fruit to Kelowna, British Columbia. After that, the boat was sold in Kelowna. Its time as a working boat on the lakes came to an end around 1920.
