Mabel Young was born on July 18, 1872. Her hometown was Worcester, Massachusetts. She started her college studies at Wellesley College in 1894.

After Wellesley, she went to Columbia University. There, she earned a master's degree in 1899. A master's degree is an advanced university degree. It shows a deep understanding of a subject.

At first, Mabel taught English at Northfield Seminary. But in 1904, she began her long career at Wellesley College. She started as an assistant in mathematics. Over time, she became a full professor. A professor is a senior teacher at a university.

Mabel took a break from teaching to study more. She worked towards her Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University. A Ph.D. is the highest university degree. It means you have done original research. Her main teacher was Frank Morley.
