What is the MacFarlane Homestead Historic District?
This historic district covers about 40 acres (16 hectares) in Coral Gables. It includes 32 old buildings that have been preserved. The district is bordered by Jefferson Street, Frow Avenue, Brooker Street, and Grand Avenue. It's a place where you can see homes and learn about the history of the people who lived there.
Who was Flora McFarlane?
The district is named after a remarkable woman named Flora McFarlane. She was the first woman to settle land by herself in this area. She was also the first schoolteacher. Flora was born in New Jersey, and her parents were from Britain.
She started her homestead on March 16, 1891. She settled on 160 acres of land. Her original home was located where Douglas Road and Day Avenue meet today. However, her house is no longer there.
A New Community in Coral Gables
In 1925, Flora McFarlane sold 20 acres of her land. This land is now the historic district. She sold it to a company owned by George Merrick. He was the founder of Coral Gables. His company turned the land into a new city neighborhood.
Many Bahamian immigrants moved to this area. They were mostly Afro-Bahamians. These families built their homes in the new subdivision. The district shows the important contributions of these immigrants to the history of Coral Gables.
