Discovering the MacLaren Art Centre
The MacLaren Art Centre is named after a very generous person. His name was Maurice MacLaren. In 1989, he gave his beautiful Victorian home, called Maple Hill, to a group working on the Barrie Gallery Project. This kind gift helped start the art centre!
A New Home for Art
Later, the MacLaren Art Centre moved to a bigger building. This new home used to be the City of Barrie's library. It was a special kind of building called a Carnegie building. The art centre added more space to it. The new and improved gallery opened its doors in September 2001. A talented architect named Siamak Hariri designed the building.
The First Artwork
The very first piece of art in the gallery's collection is a sculpture called the Spirit Catcher. It was created by an artist named Ron Baird. This amazing sculpture was first shown at a big event called Expo '86 in Vancouver. It was later given to the MacLaren Art Centre by the Peacock Foundation.
