A Special Name and New Home
The MacLaren Art Centre is named in honor of a generous person named Maurice MacLaren. In 1989, he donated his beautiful Victorian house, called Maple Hill, to an art project in Barrie. This kind gift helped start the art centre.
Moving to a Historic Building
Later, the MacLaren Art Centre found a new home. It moved into the former City of Barrie library building. This building is special because it's a "Carnegie building." These libraries were built with money from a famous businessman named Andrew Carnegie.
The art centre added new parts to this historic building. The new and improved gallery officially opened its doors in September 2001. The design for this expanded building was created by a talented architect named Siamak Hariri. He works for Hariri Pontarini Architects.
The Spirit Catcher Sculpture
The very first piece of art in the gallery's collection is a large sculpture called the Spirit Catcher. This amazing artwork was created by the artist Ron Baird. It was first shown to the public at Expo '86 in Vancouver. Later, the Peacock Foundation kindly donated it to the MacLaren Art Centre. It's a very recognizable landmark in Barrie!
