Macdara Ó Fátharta is a well-known Irish actor. He is most famous for playing the character Tadhg Ó Direáin, a villainous pub owner, in the popular Irish language TV show Ros na Rún on TG4.

About Macdara Ó Fátharta

Macdara Ó Fátharta grew up on Inis Meáin, one of the Aran Islands off the coast of County Galway, Ireland. His family lived in a historic cottage. Famous writers like John Millington Synge and Padraig Pearse stayed in this very cottage many years ago. They were learning the Irish language on the island.

After school, Macdara spent two years training at an acting school connected to the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. He then worked as an actor with the Abbey Theatre for twenty years, from 1972 to 1996. During his time there, he performed in plays by many famous writers. These included John B. Keane, Brian Friel, Tom Murphy, Shakespeare, and Chekhov. In 1975, he acted in a play called Katie Roche by Irish writer Teresa Deevy. He played the part of Jo Mahony in that show.

In 1995, Macdara Ó Fátharta helped bring the important novel Cré na Cille to the stage. He adapted the book into a play. Later, he also wrote the script for the movie version of the story. He has appeared in more than ten television shows. He also had roles in movies like Far and Away, The Blackwater Lightship, and Poitín. Poitín was the very first feature film made entirely in the Irish language.

Macdara Ó Fátharta is married to Eileen Dunne. She is a news presenter for RTÉ, Ireland's national broadcaster.
