Machu Colca, also known as Machuqolqa or Machu Qollqa, is an amazing ancient site in Peru. Its name comes from the Quechua language. Machu means "old" or "old person," and qullqa or qulqa means "storehouse" or "deposit." So, Machu Colca means "old storehouse."
This special place was built by the Inca Civilization. It is located in the Cusco Region, in the Urubamba Province. You can find it near the village of Raqch'i, just a short drive from Chinchero. Machu Colca sits high up, about 3,850 meters (12,631 feet) above sea level. It overlooks the beautiful Urubamba River.
What is Machu Colca?
Machu Colca is an archaeological site. This means it's a place where people study old buildings and objects to learn about past cultures. It shows us how the Inca people lived and built things a long time ago.
Exploring the Site
The site has 14 large terraces built into the hillside. These terraces were used for farming and building. You can still see parts of old buildings on them. It's like stepping back in time to see how the Incas organized their land.
Near the site, there are small shops where you can find local handicrafts. These are handmade items that show the culture of the area. There's also a fun Zip line park nearby. This makes Machu Colca a great place to visit for both history and adventure!
