A Lake with a Special Name
Mackie Lake is one of 25 lakes in Manitoba that were given special names in July 1947. These lakes are called 'Manitoba memorial lakes'. They were named to remember 26 brave men who died while serving their country in the Second World War.
This lake, Mackie Lake, is named after a pilot named Flying Officer Alexander Morton Mackie. He was part of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). On January 12, 1945, he and his crew were flying a plane called a Halifax III. They were on a mission to place mines in Flensburg Harbour, but they did not return. Their plane was likely shot down near a place called Langeland.
