Macondray Lane is a special walking path in San Francisco, California. It's located on the southeast side of a neighborhood called Russian Hill. This lane is a quiet, tree-lined spot that feels hidden away.

What Makes Macondray Lane Special?

Macondray Lane is so unique that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This means it's recognized as an important historic place in the United States. It's part of a larger area known as the Russian Hill–Macondray Lane District.

Where is Macondray Lane?

This charming lane stretches for two blocks. It runs from east to west, connecting Leavenworth Street and Taylor Street. It also runs parallel to Union Street and Green Street.

At the end of the lane near Taylor Street, you'll find a set of old wooden steps. These steps lead down from the lane to Taylor Street.

From Macondray Lane, you can see amazing views! Look north, and you'll spot Alcatraz Island and the sparkling San Francisco Bay. It's a great place to take photos or just enjoy the scenery.

Its Famous Connection

Macondray Lane is also famous for inspiring a well-known book series. Author Armistead Maupin used Macondray Lane as the inspiration for "Barbary Lane" in his popular Tales of the City books. He even confirmed this in a 2017 documentary called "The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin."
