The Mad Tea Party is a super fun spinning tea cup ride found at five of the six Disneyland-style theme parks around the world! It's inspired by the famous "Unbirthday Party" scene from Walt Disney's movie Alice in Wonderland. As you spin, you'll hear a carousel version of the "Unbirthday Song" from the film. This ride was one of the very first attractions when Disneyland opened way back on July 17, 1955.
You can find this ride in the Fantasyland area of each park. While it's called "Mad Tea Party" at Disneyland and Magic Kingdom, it has different names elsewhere. At Tokyo Disneyland, it's "Alice's Tea Party." In Disneyland Paris, it's "Mad Hatter's Tea Cups," and at Hong Kong Disneyland, it's "Mad Hatter Tea Cups."
Many people love this ride, but some might feel a bit dizzy because of all the spinning! Just like the Dumbo the Flying Elephant ride, Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland have a special teacup outside the ride. This is a great spot for guests to take fun photos!
How the Ride Works
The Mad Tea Party ride uses a clever system to make you spin.
- Spinning Fun: The ride has one large platform that spins around. On top of this big platform, there are three smaller turntables. Each of these smaller turntables holds six teacups.
- Double the Spin: The large platform spins one way, and the smaller turntables spin the opposite way. This creates a lot of spinning motion!
- You Control the Spin: Inside your teacup, there's a wheel in the middle. You and your friends can turn this wheel to make your teacup spin even faster! The more you turn it, the more you'll whirl around.
Different Teapots Around the World
Each Disney park's Mad Tea Party ride has its own unique touches.
- The Dormouse's Home: At Magic Kingdom in Florida and Tokyo Disneyland, you'll see a large teapot in the center of the ride platform. The Dormouse from Alice in Wonderland pops his head out of it!
- No Central Teapot: The Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland versions of the ride do not have this big central teapot. However, Hong Kong Disneyland and the March Hare Refreshments at Disneyland Paris have their own teapots nearby.
Weather and the Ride
The weather can affect how the ride operates, especially at the original Disneyland park.
- Rainy Day Rules: The very first Mad Tea Party ride at Disneyland can't run in the rain. If the spinning platforms get too wet, they can become slippery and won't spin correctly.
- Covered for Comfort: To avoid this problem, the rides at Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland are covered. This roof also protects riders from strong sun and heat.
- Paris's Special Roof: The Disneyland Paris version has a unique petal-shaped glass roof, adding to its magical look.
