History of Madaket
Madaket was the home of Mildred Carpenter Jewett, who everyone knew as "Madaket Millie." She was born on Nantucket in 1907 and spent most of her life helping the United States Coast Guard as a volunteer.
Madaket Millie's Service
During World War II, Millie was a Coastal Defense Specialist. This meant she helped protect the coast. She would patrol the shores, looking for German submarines. She also trained dogs to go on patrols with military personnel. One time, she even found a live mine in the water! She bravely towed it away from the shore, and the Navy then safely removed it.
On January 3, 1947, the local Coast Guard station in Madaket closed. On that very same day, a large ship called the Kotor got stuck near Madaket. Millie quickly noticed the ship in trouble. Her fast actions in telling the Coast Guard and helping to organize a rescue mission saved both the ship and its crew. Millie kept serving the Coast Guard on the island in different ways until she passed away in 1990. She was made an honorary officer in 1965. In 1975, she received a special award called the Meritorious Public Service Commendation for her amazing help.
