Distribution of M. berthae

Madame Berthe's mouse lemur (Microcebus berthae) is the tiniest mouse lemur and the smallest primate in the world. A primate is a group of mammals that includes monkeys, apes, and humans. This tiny animal is only about 9.2 cm (3.6 in) long. It weighs around 30 g (1.1 oz), which is about the same as a few coins!

Scientists first found this amazing primate in 1992. It was discovered in the dry Kirindy Forest in western Madagascar. After more studies, they realized it was a completely new species.

This special lemur is named after Berthe Rakotosamimanana. She was a conservationist and primatologist from Madagascar. She worked hard to protect primates and was a leader in a group called Groupe d'Etudes et de Recherche des Primates (GERP) until she passed away in 2005.

What is a Mouse Lemur?

Mouse lemurs are small, nocturnal (active at night) primates. They live only on the island of Madagascar. They get their name because they are about the size of a mouse. There are many different kinds of mouse lemurs, but Madame Berthe's is the smallest.

Where Do They Live?

Madame Berthe's mouse lemurs live in the dry deciduous forests of western Madagascar. These forests have a wet season and a dry season. During the dry season, many trees lose their leaves. This lemur prefers areas with thick tangles of vines and branches. These provide good places to hide and sleep.

What Do They Eat?

These tiny lemurs mainly eat sweet things like fruit, nectar, and tree sap. They also eat small insects and spiders. They need to find food that gives them lots of energy. This is especially important because they are so small and active at night.

How Do They Live?

Madame Berthe's mouse lemurs are mostly solitary. This means they usually live alone. During the day, they sleep in tree holes or nests made of leaves. At night, they wake up to search for food. They move quickly through the trees, using their long tails for balance.

Why Are They Endangered?

Madame Berthe's mouse lemur is an endangered species. This means there are not many of them left. The biggest threat to their survival is deforestation. This is when forests are cut down for farming, logging, or charcoal production. When their forest home disappears, these tiny lemurs have nowhere to live or find food.

Conservation groups are working to protect these forests. They are also trying to raise awareness about the importance of saving these unique animals.
