History of Madeira: How it Grew

Madeira was mostly planned out in 1871. Before that, it was known as a post town. It got its name from John Madeira, who owned a large piece of land nearby.

Becoming a Village and City

Madeira officially became a village in 1910 under Ohio state laws. The village was kept safe by elected marshals and appointed deputy marshals. In 1942, Madeira got its first Chief of Police.

Madeira became a city in August 1959. The city almost doubled in size in 1970. This happened when it added the South Kenwood area from Columbia Township.

In 2007, BusinessWeek magazine named Madeira one of the "Best Places to Raise Kids--For Less." This means it was a good and affordable place for families.
