What is a Madhhab?

The answer might be the same, but the steps to get there can be a little different.
Understanding Islamic Law

It helps Muslims know what is allowed, what is not allowed, and what is recommended. The Madhhabs are different schools within fiqh. They offer different ways to interpret and apply these laws.
The Four Main Sunni Madhhabs
In Sunni Islam, which is the largest branch of Islam, there are four main Madhhabs. These four schools are widely followed around the world. Each one is named after the great scholar who founded it.
- Hanafi Madhhab: This school was founded by Imam Abu Hanifa. It is one of the oldest and most followed Madhhabs. It is popular in places like Turkey, Central Asia, and parts of India.
- Maliki Madhhab: This school was started by Imam Malik ibn Anas. It is often followed in North Africa and parts of West Africa.
- Shafi'i Madhhab: This school was founded by Imam Al-Shafi'i. It is common in Egypt, East Africa, Southeast Asia, and parts of the Middle East.
- Hanbali Madhhab: This school was started by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal. It is often followed in Saudi Arabia and some other parts of the Arabian Peninsula.
Why are there different Madhhabs?
The different Madhhabs came about because scholars sometimes had different ways of interpreting the same religious texts. They might have used different methods to decide what the law should be. This does not mean one Madhhab is right and another is wrong. Instead, they are all seen as valid ways to practice Islam. They offer flexibility and different perspectives for Muslims around the world.

Today, many Muslims choose to follow a specific Madhhab. This helps them understand how to practice their faith in their daily lives. It provides a clear set of guidelines for things like prayer, fasting, charity, and family matters. Madhhabs help keep Islamic traditions alive and make sure that religious practices are consistent.
