Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Madngella people, also known as the Matngala or Hermit Hill tribe, are an Indigenous Australian group. They traditionally lived in the Northern Territory, Australia.

Madngella Language

The Madngella people spoke a language called Matngele. It was part of the Eastern Daly languages family. Sadly, this language is now extinct, meaning no one speaks it anymore.

Where the Madngella Lived

The Madngella people traditionally lived in the Northern Territory of Australia. Their land was around the middle and lower parts of the Daly River. They lived close to the Mulluk-Mulluk people.

Their traditional territory covered about 260 square kilometres (100 square miles). This area included Hermit Hill and land west of the Daly River. The Yunggor people lived to their northwest, and the Pongaponga people lived to their north.

Madngella History

The Madngella tribe experienced big changes after European settlers arrived. Over about 50 years, starting in the early 1900s, their traditional way of life changed a lot.

Later, Jesuit missionaries tried several times to set up a mission in the Daly River area. They eventually managed to create a successful community at Hermit Hill.
