Mads Østberg's Rally Journey

Mads Østberg started his rally career in 2004. His first big event was the 2006 Swedish Rally. He drove a Subaru Impreza WRC 2003 and finished 31st. Later in 2006, he raced in two more World Rally Championship (WRC) events. He had to stop early in Rally Finland but finished 23rd in the Wales Rally GB.

In 2007, Mads continued racing with a Subaru Impreza. He was part of the Adapta team. He won his first special stage at the 2007 Swedish Rally. A special stage is a timed section of a rally. He also earned his first WRC point by finishing eighth in 2007 Rally Finland. That same year, Mads won the Norwegian Rally Championship.

Mads kept racing with Adapta Motorsport in 2008. He used a Subaru Impreza WRC 2007. He did not score any points in his seven races that year. In 2009, he earned points in three WRC events. His best finish was sixth place at the 2009 Rally Portugal.

Rally Finland 2010 - EK 1 - Mads Östberg

In 2010, Mads raced in four WRC rallies with a Subaru. He also drove a Ford Fiesta S2000 in two other events. For the second year in a row, he finished 11th in the overall driver standings. In 2011, Mads joined the Stobart M-Sport Ford Rally Team. He drove a Ford Fiesta RS WRC. He finished second at the 2011 Rally Sweden after leading for much of the race. He got another second-place finish at the 2011 Rally GB. This helped him finish sixth in the drivers' championship.

In 2012, Mads returned to Adapta Motorsport. He still drove a Ford Fiesta RS WRC. After getting third place in Sweden, he won his first rally. This happened at the 2012 Rally de Portugal. The original winner, Mikko Hirvonen, was disqualified. This made Mads the first non-French or Finnish driver to win a rally since 2005. He was also only the second Norwegian to win a WRC event. Mads then finished third in Rally Argentina. He ended the 2012 season in fourth place overall.

Mads Østberg went back to Qatar M-Sport for the 2013 season. M-Sport became the main Ford team after Ford officially left in 2012. Mads achieved two podium finishes that year. He ended the season in sixth place. In December 2013, it was announced that Mads would join Citroën's factory team for 2014. His teammate was Kris Meeke.

In 2014, Mads earned four podium finishes, with his best being second place. He finished fifth in the drivers' championship. In 2015, Mads continued with the Citroën World Rally Team. He achieved two second-place finishes early in the season. He was ranked second in the championship for a while. He finished the season in fourth place overall. This made him the "best of the rest" behind the three Volkswagen drivers.

At the end of 2015, Mads announced he would return to M-Sport for 2016. He drove an updated version of the Ford Fiesta RS WRC. His co-driver was Ola Fløene. Mads secured two third-place finishes. He ended the season in seventh place in the standings.

Mads Østberg decided to race a limited schedule in 2017. He drove as a private entry. This was because he and his wife, Beate, welcomed their first child in February that year.
